THE PTiYP STORY
I've been taking photos for over 50 years, and teaching photography since 2017. Some time ago one of my clients said "I wish I could have you standing next to me all the time while I'm out with the camera, telling me what settings to use." and that got me thinking.

What if this was actually possible? I can't always be there in person of course, but if I could provide a similar level of support in another way, it could be very helpful for people who are learning how to use a camera for the first time. And so 'Photography Tutor in Your Pocket' was born.

The app took five months to create, working closely with my developer (who also happens to be my husband!) to turn the ideas that I had in my head into reality. That meant a balance of content that was detailed enough but not too complex - presented in a way that would be easy for beginners to understand, and also easy for them to read and use when outside, even in bright light.

Once the app was complete we then went through a structured testing phase to meet Google's strict requirements, involving a group of testers from my industry network - covering those who were experienced photographers and who could comment on the technical content, plus those who were new to photography and could provide feedback from the perspective of our intended audience.

Once testing was complete, the Android version went live on the Google PlayStore in May 2025 - and we are now working on the iPhone version! If you would like to be notified when this is also available to download, please email me and I will add you to the list.

The aim of the app is not to be an exhaustive photography course in its own right, which covers every subject in minute technical detail. In fact it's designed to be used alongside any other sources of tuition you may have come across. But it bridges the gap between the information you might read online at home, and knowing which buttons to press, and what settings to use for different types of images, when you're actually out 'in the field' - often literally! It also contains links to longer tuition documents on my website, to give added context to the advice in the app itself.
It worked perfectly and I love the app! My husband has been trying to teach me about using my camera but he gives me too much information. I just need to be told what to do to take the best image possible, once I'm comfortable with that, I can take a deeper dive into the whys and wherefores. Your app gives me just enough info and in a way I can understand. Thank you so much!
